It will not only fill a gap on our bookshelves but will also greatly increase our knowledge of many types of beaded items made and used by Zulu peopls in southern Africa. Elizabeth Bennett (of Africa Direct Inc who have published this volume) first met the author Hlengiwe Dube in 1994 and was awe-struck by her knowledge of South African arts. They met on subsequent occasions and it was suggested that she write a book, which she did, and Elizabeth's company has published it. Here is Hlengiwe's knowledge, accompanied by pictures and stories presented to the world. It is the first book on Zulu beadwork based on oral history, and the author is probably the greatest living authority on Zulu beadwork. There are sections on beadwork messages, beadwork 1950's-1970's, beadwork during pregnancy, sangomas ('witchdoctors') and beadwork, snuff and beadwork, love letters, beadwork of different areas, who wears what, shembe beads, piercing, household items, beaded dolls and many more. It is full of colour pictures of beaded items, beadwork and people wearing beadwork. If you collect (or just love) African beadwork, this book is a must! |
